- A typical US digital marketer earns $78,760 a year. That's the BLS median for market research analysts and marketing specialists in May 2025, the occupation that holds SEO, paid search and social titles.
- BLS publishes no separate digital marketing wage line. O*NET files Digital Marketing Strategist, SEO Strategist and Social Media Specialist under Search Marketing Strategists, which shows its parent occupation's pay.
- Marketing managers earn about double. Their occupation, which includes internet marketing managers, had a $166,790 median, and the top 10% made more than $293,610.
- Where you work matters: specialists earned a $98,580 median in New York and $72,520 in Texas.
- BLS projects 7% job growth for marketing specialists and for marketing managers from 2025 to 2035. Advertising and promotions managers are projected to shrink 4%. BLS also expects AI to speed up digital ad work.
What is the average digital marketing salary in the US?
$78,760 a year is the typical US digital marketing salary, and the figure to use. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook says "The median annual wage for market research analysts was $78,760 in May 2025." The page is titled for market research analysts, but its data covers the combined occupation, market research analysts and marketing specialists. That's the occupation where BLS counts search marketing and web analytics work.
BLS released these May 2025 figures on May 15, 2026. Its national wage table puts the mean hourly wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists at $43.03, against a median of $37.87. That's a gap of $5.16 an hour. Their mean annual wage is $89,490, so a smaller group of high earners pulls the average above what the typical specialist makes. We use the median throughout, as in our graphic designer salary guide, since it's the pay of the worker in the middle.
The range is wide. The BLS handbook reports that "The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,390, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $155,480." The middle half earned between $58,350 and $108,310, per O*NET's wage table of the same BLS data. For context, the BLS handbook also notes that "In May 2025, the median annual wage for all workers was $50,980." By our arithmetic, the typical marketing specialist earns about 54% more than that.
Which BLS jobs count as digital marketing?
Four occupations cover the work: market research analysts and marketing specialists (13-1161), marketing managers (11-2021), advertising and promotions managers (11-2011) and public relations specialists (27-3031). The first is the main one. None has digital marketing in its name, and BLS publishes no separate digital marketing wage line. So every figure in this post maps a title you'd search for onto an official occupation.
The official definition of 13-1161 says these workers "May employ search marketing tactics, analyze web metrics" and recommend ways to lift search rankings. The 2018 Standard Occupational Classification lists Search Marketing Strategist as an example title there. It puts Internet Marketing Manager and Marketing Director under marketing managers (11-2021), and keeps advertising and promotions managers (11-2011) separate.
O*NET, a job database sponsored by the US Department of Labor, goes a step further. Its Search Marketing Strategists profile lists reported titles such as Digital Marketing Strategist, SEO Strategist, Paid Search Strategist, Internet Marketing Specialist and Social Media Specialist. That profile has no wage figure of its own. The $78,760 median it shows belongs to the parent occupation.
Social media straddles a line. O*NET's profile for public relations specialists says they "May specialize in using social media." A social role that's mostly press and reputation work can land in that fourth occupation instead, where the median was $74,750.
Digital marketing salary by role, from specialist to director
A digital marketing specialist salary maps to a $78,760 median, and manager titles map to $133,660 or $166,790. The table below matches the titles people search for with the occupation BLS counts them in. The mapping is our reading of the official definitions and O*NET's reported titles, so treat the edge cases as judgment calls.
| Title you'll see | Where BLS counts it | Median, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Digital marketing specialist, coordinator or strategist | Market research analysts and marketing specialists (13-1161) | $78,760 |
| SEO specialist, PPC or paid search specialist | Same occupation, via O*NET's Search Marketing Strategists (13-1161.01) | $78,760 |
| Digital marketing analyst | 13-1161, which also covers market research analysts | $78,760 |
| Social media specialist | 13-1161.01, or public relations specialists (27-3031) when the job is mostly PR | $78,760 or $74,750 |
| Social media manager | No exact match: 13-1161 for hands-on roles, marketing managers (11-2021) for roles that run a team | $78,760 to $166,790 |
| Advertising or paid media manager | Advertising and promotions managers (11-2011) | $133,660 |
| Digital marketing manager or director | Marketing managers (11-2021), which lists Internet Marketing Manager and Marketing Director | $166,790 |
Medians from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook for specialists, managers and PR specialists, modified 27 Aug 2026. The title mapping is our reading of the 2018 SOC and O*NET's reported titles.
In BLS data, the big jump comes from changing occupation. Every specialist title shares the same $78,760 median, so the data can't separate an SEO specialist salary from a social media specialist's. Moving into marketing management takes the median to $166,790, a little more than double.
Where does a social media manager salary fit?
A social media manager salary has no single BLS figure. By our mapping in the table above, a hands-on social media manager falls under marketing specialists, with a $78,760 median. One who runs a team falls under marketing managers, with a $166,790 median. If the job is mostly press and reputation work, the public relations specialist median of $74,750 is the closer match.
Pay at every percentile
| Percentile | Marketing specialists | Specialists, hourly | Ad and promotions managers | Marketing managers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10th | $43,390 | $20.86 | $63,300 | $90,260 |
| 25th | $58,350 | $28.05 | $91,370 | $123,020 |
| Median | $78,760 | $37.87 | $133,660 | $166,790 |
| 75th | $108,310 | $52.07 | $201,050 | $216,410 |
| 90th | $155,480 | $74.75 | $286,240 | $293,610 |
O*NET OnLine local wages for 13-1161, 11-2011 and 11-2021, each labeled Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data.
The overlap matters if you're hiring. A specialist at the 90th percentile ($155,480) earns more than the median advertising and promotions manager ($133,660). Titles overlap more than the medians suggest, so price the skills and the scope of the job, and treat the title as a starting point.
How much do digital marketing managers make?
$166,790 is the typical digital marketing manager salary. That was the May 2025 median for marketing managers, the occupation that includes internet marketing managers. The BLS handbook adds that "The lowest 10 percent earned less than $90,260, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $293,610." Advertising and promotions managers earned less, with a $133,660 median.

BLS doesn't publish a separate digital marketing director salary. Marketing Director appears in the SOC as an example title under marketing managers, so directors are counted inside the same distribution. Where directors fall within it isn't published, but the percentile table above shows how far the range stretches.
Location moves manager pay a long way. The median was $193,620 in California and $181,200 in New York, against $166,790 nationally. By our arithmetic, California runs 16% above the national median and New York 9% above it. In California, 90% earned more than $104,370, and the top 10% earned more than $326,400.
There's a usual route up, and the BLS handbook names it. These managers typically move up from jobs as sales representatives, market research analysts or public relations specialists, and typically need a bachelor's degree. That's the step from a $78,760 specialist median to a $166,790 manager median.
How much does location change a digital marketer's pay?
Across the six places we checked, specialist medians ran from $72,520 in Texas to $98,580 in New York, a gap of $26,060 by our arithmetic. The national median was $78,760. We pulled five states and Washington, DC from O*NET's BLS wage tables, so read this as a sample, not a full ranking.
Washington, DC came in at $98,090, just behind New York. Washington state ($95,120) and California ($94,700) sit close together, while Florida and Texas fall below the national median. In New York, the top 10% earned more than $165,920. If you're hiring locally, your state's median is a better anchor than the national one. If the role can be remote, our specialist placement model is priced differently, as the employer section below shows.
Industry matters too. The BLS handbook lists median pay in the industries that employ the most marketing specialists. Information led at $102,670, ahead of management of companies ($99,850) and finance and insurance ($94,330). These are the biggest employers, so treat the list as a guide to where the jobs are, not a ranking of the best-paying industries.

Why does every digital marketing salary figure look different?
Digital marketing salary figures vary because each source measures something different. They differ on the titles they include, on median versus mean, on base versus total pay, and on whether freelancers count. A single BLS wage table gives market research analysts and marketing specialists a $37.87 median hourly wage and a $43.03 mean. Change the title mix or the pay definition and the number moves again.
Start with what BLS counts. The OEWS FAQ says "Wages for the OEWS survey are straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay." They include commissions, incentive pay and production bonuses. They leave out year-end and nonproduction bonuses, profit-sharing, stock bonuses and overtime. So a BLS salary is base pay plus some incentives, and it isn't total compensation.
Freelancers aren't in it either. The same BLS FAQ says OEWS counts only workers paid a wage or salary. In its words, "The survey does not cover the self-employed, owners and partners in unincorporated firms, household workers, or unpaid family workers." A solo SEO consultant or a freelance ads manager isn't in any figure on this page. Don't use BLS data to price a contractor, and don't use a contractor's rate to judge a salary.
Then there's the title problem. Digital marketing runs from coordinator to director. A figure that blends all of those lands somewhere between $78,760 and $166,790, and it may not describe the job you're filling. Salary sites also use their own samples and methods. Run five checks before you trust any single number.
- 01Median or mean? A mean runs higher when a few people earn a lot. Check which one a figure uses before you compare it with another.
- 02Base or total pay? Check whether bonuses, profit-sharing and stock are in or out. BLS leaves most of them out.
- 03Which titles? A single digital marketing figure may blend specialist and manager pay. Look for one title per figure.
- 04Where and when? Specialist medians ran from $72,520 to $98,580 across the six places we checked. Look for the survey date, too.
- 05Employees or freelancers? BLS counts employees only.
Is digital marketing still a good career in 2026?
By the BLS projections, yes for most roles. The BLS handbook says "Employment of market research analysts is projected to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations." That projection covers marketing specialists too. Marketing managers are projected to grow 7% as well, while advertising and promotions managers are projected to shrink 4%.
| Occupation | Jobs in 2025 | Jobs in 2035 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market research analysts and marketing specialists | 952,700 | 1,019,000 | +7% |
| Marketing managers | 421,600 | 450,800 | +7% |
| Advertising and promotions managers | 33,200 | 31,900 | -4% |
BLS employment projections, 2025 to 2035, from the handbook pages for specialists and managers, modified 27 Aug 2026. These job counts come from a different BLS series than the wage survey counts, so don't compare the two.
In openings, the BLS handbook projects "About 82,000 openings for market research analysts" each year across the combined occupation. Its page for managers projects about 36,300 a year for advertising, promotions and marketing managers together. The stated reason for specialist growth is data: "Employment growth is expected to be driven by an increasing use of data and market research across many industries."
The BLS handbook for managers brings AI into the outlook. It writes that "Managers and their staff are both expected to use improving technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to more quickly generate, test, and modify digital advertisements." At the same time, "Marketing managers are expected to continue to be in demand as organizations use marketing campaigns to maintain and expand their market share."
Our reading: the durable skills are measurement and judgment, because BLS ties growth to data and expects AI to speed up production work. Search work is shifting too, toward being cited in AI answers, which our LLM SEO guide covers. For how small businesses use AI today, see our 2026 small business AI statistics.
What a digital marketer costs you as the employer
More than the salary line. A full-time specialist at the national median costs $78,760 a year before employer payroll taxes, benefits, software and your own time managing the work. For full-time private industry workers in June 2026, the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release says wages and salaries "accounted for 68.5 percent of employer costs." Get your own fully loaded figure from your payroll provider before you post the job. Then compare it with the three other ways to get the same work done.

| Option | What you're paying for | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time US employee | Salary (specialist median $78,760, manager median $166,790) plus taxes, benefits and tools | Marketing is daily work and you can manage it in-house |
| Freelancer | Hours or a project, at a rate that has to cover their own taxes, tools and unbilled time; BLS wage data leaves them out | The job is a defined project with a clear end |
| Agency | A team and a scope, billed as a retainer or by project | You need several skills at once, such as paid ads, SEO and social media |
| Placed remote specialist | A vetted specialist we employ as employer of record, for one flat monthly fee quoted on the Discovery Call | You want a dedicated person on your team without running payroll and compliance yourself |
