Key takeaways
  • The median US graphic designer earned $62,960 in May 2025, or $30.27 an hour, per BLS. That's about $12,000 above the median for all US workers.
  • The middle half of designers earn $49,040 to $81,830. The top 10% clear $104,910.
  • Location moves pay more than industry does. The District of Columbia's median is $87,920 and West Virginia's is $40,350, while three of the four largest employing industries sit within $2,600 of each other.
  • Wages are 70% of what a private employer spends on a worker, per BLS. At that split, a $62,960 designer costs roughly $90,000 a year all-in.
  • BLS expects designer jobs to shrink 2% by 2035 as AI tools raise output, with about 16,000 openings a year still to fill.

What is the average graphic designer salary in 2026?

The median graphic designer salary in the US is $62,960 a year, or $30.27 an hour. In the words of the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, "The median annual wage for graphic designers was $62,960 in May 2025." It's the newest federal figure, released on 15 May 2026.

Bar chart of US graphic designer pay by percentile, May 2025: lowest 10% under $39,520, 25th $49,040, median $62,960, 75th $81,830, top 10% over $104,910

Median and mean are different numbers, and mixing them up is one reason salary figures online disagree. BLS's national wage table puts the mean at $70,560 a year, or $33.92 an hour, across 197,830 designer jobs on payrolls. High earners pull the mean up, even though there are fewer of them. Use the median for what a typical designer makes.

Against the whole workforce, designers do well. The median for all US workers was $50,980 in May 2025, so a typical designer earns about $12,000 more. On the hourly mean the gap nearly closes: $33.92 for designers against $33.54 for all occupations, in the same BLS table. Across all workers, the mean sits far above the median of $24.51, which shows how hard top earners pull an average.

Why graphic design salary figures differ from site to site

Most job boards and salary tools build their figures from job ads or from pay their users report, each with its own dates. BLS runs an employer survey that covers "wage and salary workers in nonfarm establishments," per the notes for that survey, known as OEWS. Graphic designers are occupation 27-1024 if you want to check a figure yourself. Every wage figure here comes from BLS, directly or through O*NET, the Labor Department's occupation database, which republishes BLS wages.

How does a graphic designer salary grow from entry level to senior?

BLS doesn't publish pay by years of experience, so the spread across percentiles is the best proxy. The middle half of US designers earn between $49,040 and $81,830, per O*NET's national wage table built on BLS 2025 data. One step up, art directors and web and digital interface designers earn medians above $100,000.

Our reading, not a BLS figure: most junior and entry-level designers land in the bottom quarter, under $49,040. The bottom 10% earn under $39,520. A senior graphic designer who stays in the role is more likely to sit in the top quarter, above $81,830. Where someone lands inside that range depends heavily on location, which the next section covers.

Bar chart of US median pay in May 2025: all workers $50,980, graphic designers $62,960, web and digital interface designers $104,000, art directors $114,850
Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook pages for graphic designers, web developers and digital designers and art directors, all last modified 27 August 2026. May 2025 wage data.

Art directors earned a median of $114,850 in May 2025, and BLS lists five years or more of related experience as typical. Web and digital interface designers earned $104,000. For an employer, those are separate markets. If the job means directing other designers, or designing how a site or app works, budget for those roles. Match the title to the work before you set the pay.

On education, BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level requirement. We weigh the portfolio more heavily. Our own application for designers asks for a portfolio link and a short video, and it doesn't ask about a degree at all.

Graphic designer salary by state: $87,920 in DC, $40,350 in West Virginia

In the District of Columbia, the median graphic designer salary is $87,920, against $62,960 nationally, in BLS 2025 data published through O*NET. In West Virginia it's $40,350, less than half the DC figure. O*NET keeps a separate wage page for each of the 50 states and DC, so you can look up your own.

Bar chart of 2025 graphic designer median pay by state: DC $87,920, Rhode Island $78,220, New York $77,340, Massachusetts $76,710, California $75,130, West Virginia $40,350
Sources: O*NET OnLine state wage pages for graphic designers, each linked in the text, BLS 2025 wage data, retrieved 18 September 2026. O*NET's national table puts the US median at $62,960. Figures are not adjusted for living costs.

Rhode Island at $78,220, New York at $77,340, Massachusetts at $76,710 and California at $75,130 also pay well above the national median. Maryland is just $10 behind California, at $75,120. At the other end, Wyoming ($45,150), Mississippi ($45,640) and Arkansas ($46,220) sit much closer to West Virginia than to the US median.

For a remote hire, the map cuts both ways. A designer in a lower-paying state may welcome a remote role that beats local pay. An employer in DC or New York hiring locally competes against pay well above the national median. Hiring remotely lets you look past your own state's pay scale, and past its shortage of candidates if it has one.

Which industries pay graphic designers the most?

Among the four industries BLS lists as the largest employers of designers, specialized design services pay the highest median, $63,780, per the BLS handbook. The information sector ($62,970) and advertising and PR ($61,200) sit close behind, within $2,600 of the top. Printing is the outlier at $47,120. Outside print, the industry you hire in moves pay far less than the state you hire in.

Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Graphic Designers, last modified 27 August 2026. Median annual wages for May 2025; shares of the 253,100 designer jobs in 2025.

Those four industries employ about 30% of designers between them. The single largest group sits outside any industry. Of the roughly 253,100 designer jobs BLS counts in 2025, self-employed workers held 20%. That's roughly one designer in five working for themselves, and none of them appear in the wage figures above.

What do freelance graphic designers make?

There's no federal figure for freelance graphic designer rates. Your closest benchmark is the employee graphic designer hourly rate: $30.27 at the median, or about $43 with benefits added, by our estimate. The BLS wage survey "does not include the self-employed," according to its OEWS notes. So its wage table counts 197,830 designer jobs on payrolls, against about 253,100 in the handbook, where self-employed workers hold 20%.

A freelance graphic designer sketches on a tablet with a stylus under a desk lamp, working late at home

Marketplaces and salary sites do publish freelance rates. They're self-reported or vendor figures we couldn't verify, so we don't repeat them here. Use the employee number as a floor for reading a freelance quote, not a ceiling. A freelancer pays benefits and payroll costs out of the rate, plus software and the unpaid hours spent finding the next client. So a freelance rate well above $30.27 isn't automatically expensive. Judge it on the total for a defined job, like a logo, a set of social templates or a landing page, rather than the hourly number.

Availability is the other trade-off. BLS notes that "Those who are self-employed may need to adjust their workday to meet with clients in the evenings or on weekends." A freelancer's week bends around several clients, and yours is only one of them. If your requests arrive same-day, that matters more than the rate.

Hiring a designer or another remote specialist?

We recruit, vet and employ remote specialists as your employer of record, and you trial one free for three days before you commit. Design isn't on our standard role list yet, so tell us the job and we'll say plainly whether we can vet it.

What does a graphic designer cost an employer?

Roughly $90,000 a year at the median once benefits are counted, by our estimate. In June 2026, wages were 70.0% of what private employers spent on compensation per hour worked, per BLS's employer cost survey. Benefits made up the other 30.0%. Apply that split to a $62,960 salary and benefits add about $27,000.

Cost linePrivate industry, per hour workedMedian designer, per year
Wages and salaries$32.82 (70.0%)$62,960
Benefits$14.07 (30.0%)About $27,000 (our estimate)
Total compensation$46.89About $89,900 (our estimate)

Private industry: BLS, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026 data, released 9 September 2026. Salary: BLS handbook, May 2025. Our estimate applies the private-industry 70/30 split; your own benefits package will differ.

That all-in number is what to compare any alternative against. A freelancer, a design subscription, an agency retainer and a remote specialist through a staffing partner each bundle those costs into one price. Compare the total yearly cost for the same volume of work. If what you need is graphics for your social channels on a schedule, our social media service produces them as part of the channel work.

What a higher salary buys

Moving from the 25th percentile ($49,040) to the 75th ($81,830) adds $32,790 in salary, or about $46,800 a year all-in at the same split. BLS can't tell you what that buys. Our view, from hiring designers for our own client work: you're paying for judgment, which shows up as less of your time spent managing. In practice, that's turning a one-line brief into the right questions, handling "I don't like it" without three extra rounds, and knowing which of three deadlines comes first. A cheaper designer can often produce the same file, but the difference shows up on your calendar. We weighed your time the same way in our guide to hiring a GoHighLevel expert.

The job outlook: 2% fewer jobs by 2035, and AI design tools

BLS projects graphic designer employment to fall 2% from 2025 to 2035, a loss of 4,200 jobs. It still expects openings: "Despite declining employment, about 16,000 openings for graphic designers are projected each year, on average, over the decade." With total jobs shrinking, those openings come from people leaving the role.

BLS gives the reason: "Automated design tools, such as artificial intelligence (AI), are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers." The same page expects designers to stay in demand as companies keep growing their digital presence. Our reading for employers: don't expect a designer shortage to push pay up soon.

AI tools also change what a portfolio proves. Anyone can generate a polished image now, so a portfolio only helps you if the work is the designer's own. That's why our application asks candidates to confirm their portfolio is original, with no AI-generated or copied pieces. If you're weighing AI tools against a hire, the design slot in our small business AI tool stack shows what Canva covers alone.

What our graphic designer application tests

We hire designers for our own client work, so we've written down what we check. The application for our in-house graphic designer role takes about 8 to 10 minutes. It opens with three non-negotiables: real availability for urgent daytime tasks, original work that's the candidate's own, and a portfolio they're proud to share.

A designer records a short video introduction on a phone set on a tripod, her laptop open on the table
  1. 01Tools they can deliver in. Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, Figma, InDesign, After Effects or Premiere Pro. We ask them to pick only tools they've done real work in, not something they opened once.
  2. 02Range. The work they've done professionally: social posts and stories, logos and brand identity, web and landing page graphics, ad creatives, pitch decks, print, packaging and motion.
  3. 03Remote history. Whether they've worked remotely for a company or agency, as opposed to marketplace gigs on Fiverr or Upwork.
  4. 04Copy as well as design. Whether they can write captions, headlines and short copy, since a social post needs both.
  5. 05Four scenarios. A one-line brief with no brand guide. A client who says "I don't like it. It doesn't feel right." Three tasks due in 2 hours, tomorrow and in 3 days. A Meta lead ad that has to drive clicks.
  6. 06Speed and proof. Their fastest brief-to-delivery turnaround and what the project was, a portfolio link, and a 60 to 90 second video introduction.

Those four scenarios test what a portfolio can't show: how someone works when the brief, the feedback or the deadline is messy. That's the judgment we'd expect a higher salary to pay for. Candidates also confirm that an unpaid design test may be part of selection.

If you're hiring a designer yourself, borrow the idea even if you skip the form. Send every finalist the same vague brief and the same vague feedback, then compare the replies. It takes an hour. We'd trust it over a second portfolio review. If you'd rather we run the search, see how we recruit, vet and employ remote specialists.
